Leadership Southlake 2012-2013: September 20th Meeting Recap:
On the afternoon of Thursday, September 20th, the 2012-2013 Leadership Southlake class met for the first time. Led by Jill Johnson, Vice-President of Operations, the activities and speakers of the day served to set an open and inviting yet professional tone for this nine-month journey.
Members of the class which represent a variety of area professions began by simply introducing themselves and getting to know about each other. A very engaging Ice Breaker activity involving self-portrait drawings summarizing the important events of each member’s life and then presented to the rest of the class was hilarious, fun, meaningful and effective in getting to know a lot about each other quickly all rolled into one!
The afternoon also offered the Leadership Southlake class of 2012-2013 an opportunity to hear from two fabulous speakers. Shana Yelverton, Southlake City Manager, presented a very informative and interesting summary of the City of Southlake from its inception to the present. Mrs. Yelverton was followed by Michelle Ford who founded International Learning Solutions, Inc.. Ms. Ford, a dynamic speaker, focused on the art of Leadership and Visioning and led class members through a team activity on the topic of Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald’s, as an example.
The afternoon wrapped up with homework assignments from Ms. Johnson which served not only to prepare but also excite class members about meetings to come!

Testimonial from Cheryl Fairbanks re: Session 2 of Leadership Southlake, Economic Development, inc. Greg Last, Director of Economic Development & Tourism & Richard Caulder of Sabre Travel Network…..10/18/12
I was thrilled with the tour of Southlake from boundary to boundary, North/South/East & West lead by Greg Last, a man who has given his heart, mind and soul to carefully developing our fine town. He has spent more than 30 years and should get more credit for the time, dedication and efforts he’s invested to create such a desirable place to live and work. His trivia comments make the tour human and fun, giving insights that most people sail right down Hwy. 114 or Southlake Blvd. oblivious to ever knowing. His final presentation of stats, facts and data ranging from the average household income being the highest in the US for cities with more than 20,000 population to websites and resources his department offers Southlake business people for FREE are abundant gifts.
I moved to Southlake in 1980 and have sold many homes here through the years. My memories were refreshed and enhanced with Greg’s stories. My business will be even more successful and benefit my clients with all the additional information I learned from Greg Last.
Mid-day, we spent several hours touring Sabre Travel Network’s headquarters tucked away near Trophy Club. The speaker, Richard Caulder, was a delightful host who obviously loves his company and leaders. Sabre exemplifies every business book’s description of clearly defining a vision and culture to its employees and then delivering more than promised. Most of us were ready to submit applications for consideration of employment by Sabre at the end of Richard’s tour! Do NOT miss this segment. You will be so proud to tell others who are considering relocating to Southlake about this leading edge co., the fact that they’ve chosen Southlake to house their World Headquarters and employ 2700 people in this one location. Their culture of respect for Nature and softening the business footprint on our planet is exemplary and humbling. In fact, their facility is the first LEEDS certified building in Texas and only one of ten in the U.S.
I’m enthusiastic about this day because nowhere else could I have had this opportunity to enhance my knowledge, facts and resources in one day in such a professional manner. Thank you for the absolute gift, Jill, Dana, Greg and Richard…..and PS – thank you, Sabre, for the first class dining experience!!
