The Journey Begins
As a prospective Leadership Southlake applicant, you are embarking on a journey that will last a lifetime. This journey is a result of your commitment to excellence and leadership in your community, both personally and professionally. Although this passage is one that many have taken since the program began in 1989, the end result is unique to each graduate.
Leadership Southlake is a dynamic, fun way to learn about Southlake. Alumni include a variety of community and civic leaders. For 20 years, Leadership Southlake has introduced emerging and recognized leaders to the inner workings of our community through an eight-month program on topics that affect our quality of life. This course is similar to community leadership programs presented in virtually every major city in the United States.
The Leadership Southlake voyage begins with an opening orientation in September. It is followed by an invaluable full-day retreat scheduled on a Friday in October. Through monthly sessions, you will learn about issues that will face Southlake in the years to come and how your leadership skills can influence the path to the community’s continued success. The class will plan and implement a community service project that will serve as its legacy for years to come. The course concludes with a graduation ceremony where students showcase their advocacy projects and are publicly recognized.

Learn the ropes with Leadership Southlake
One of the most exciting sessions of Leadership Southlake is the ropes challenge course. This challenge by choice course is by far the most exhilarating opportunity you have to learn about teambuilding.
You’ll attend the day-long program held at the onset of Leadership Southlake to ensure that the groundwork for consensus building and leadership skills is laid early in the year. The course consists of cables, logs, platforms, ropes, trees, games and activities that offer all attendees both a physical and mental challenge.
This session provides you a greater insight not only to the group as a whole but to yourself as well. You and your classmates leave the camp feeling a special bond that carries through the entire program and beyond.
The day’s activities teach the you how to work together to accomplish goals and draw on the strengths of all. Your group leaves with a greater understanding that it isn’t always size that matters but what is on the inside that enables you to perform at their best.
The course starts with group exercises of minimal intensity and progresses throughout the day. Activities, including the exciting zip line at the end of the ropes course and the opportunity to jump from a 25- or 50-foot pole after climbing to the top of it are all optional based on your comfort level.
While you begin the day as individuals, you leave as a cohesive team ready to fulfill the goals of Leadership Southlake.
